Karla Weston’s head flew up at the sound of screeching tires, heart hammering, her hand going immediately to the grip of the pistol on her belt. The black sedan came flying down the long road leading from the entry checkpoint like a demon escaping hell, spun around the corner, and screeched to a halt mere feet from her. Two men got out. They were big men, dressed head-to-toe in black, with pistols dangling from their thick belts. The driver hid behind a black hood with a sinister white skull emblazoned on it, his partner behind a red grinning devil. Red Devil went around and opened the back door of the car, ushering someone out.

The girl couldn’t have been more than eighteen or nineteen. She had a rebel air about her with a black leather jacket hanging over her tight shirt and torn jeans, her fair skin contrasting sharply with long, raven-black hair. Her nose was pierced, and she had on far too much makeup. Her hands were cuffed behind her, but Red Devil still pulled out his pistol and shoved it into the small of her back, putting a hand on her shoulder as he guided her over toward Karla.

“Evening, Weston,” White Skull said as they approached. “Been busy tonight?”

“Like every Halloween. You’d think people would know how to obey curfew by now.”

“What? And take away all our fun?” Red Devil said. “Who’d want that?”

I would, Karla thought but didn’t say. She’d love nothing more than for Halloween to be boring again, the worst things on their agenda being to bust drunk drivers or break up high school parties gone too far. Not this. This wasn’t what she signed up for the police force to do.

“Ah shit, not another one.” Karla’s partner, Jimmy Kilpatrick, stepped up beside her, eyeing the girl and shaking his head. Jimmy was a shorter, skinnier version of the other two, but his mask was a green goblin with a drunken grin. Karla’s own mask was a mouthless china doll with a cracked skull. “I don’t know how much more of this I can take.”

White Skull sneered at him. “Stop being such a pussy, Kilpatrick. You’ll take as much of it as you have to because it’s your job, and it’s what we have to do to keep people safe.”

“That doesn’t mean we have to like it,” Karla said.

“Nothing wrong with enjoying your job a little,” Red Devil countered.

“No, I guess not…if you’re a sick, fucking sadist, Kowalski.”

“What the fuck ever,” White Skull—Edgar Valdez—said to her. “Rules are rules and this bitch fits the profile. Take a look.”

Karla crossed her arms as she appraised the girl. “What evidence do you have?”

“Glad you asked.” Karla couldn’t actually see the smile on Kowalski’s face through the grinning devil mask, but she could hear it in his voice. “First, there’s the obvious: she’s female, she’s out on Halloween Night, and she’s got the tattoos. Here, let me show you.” Kowalski pulled out his survival knife and began cutting away the girl’s clothes.
